I've still got some left to try, but as I mixed this in to a batch I thought it might be "the one". I tore off the top of the bag and it just came off cleanly, a simple ZIP! and the bag was open. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal but when your hands are covered in stuff and you have to fight with a bag of perlite, it doesn't make you feel warmly about it. This was a relief.
But next! The best! Part! I started carefully, oh so carefully, pouring it into my mix. The first pour, some dust came up but it wasn't too bad.
Then, no dust came out as I continued. I confess, I poured the whole bag into the mix. Partially because it was that big of a mix but also because I was fixated on how no dust was coming out and I am so used to HUGE, room-covering dust plumes from perlite (and not just from the child sized bag, but other brands I've been trying) that REQUIRE I wear a mask and vacuum immediately afterwards even if I'm super careful. I got every last bit out of the bag and started mixing and still no dust.
I'm a huge fan of this. I'm going to order more to see if this is consistent, but so far I'm really thrilled with it. It made things so much easier. I don't have the energy to rinse perlite, it's an unreasonable mess. I'm really thrilled to have honestly clean perlite now.
The primary benefit of Espoma Organic Perlite lies in its ability to loosen and aerate heavy soils. By incorporating this lightweight and porous material into the soil, it helps create air pockets, improving drainage and preventing soil compaction. This enhanced aeration allows plant roots to access oxygen more easily, promoting healthy root development.
Furthermore, Espoma Organic Perlite aids in preventing soil compaction. When used as a soil amendment, it helps maintain soil structure over time, reducing the risk of compacted soil that can impede root growth and nutrient absorption.
The promotion of root growth is another key advantage of using Espoma Organic Perlite. Its porous nature allows roots to extend more freely, enabling better nutrient uptake and overall plant health. This leads to stronger, more resilient plants with improved yields.
Overall, Espoma Organic Perlite is a valuable addition to any gardening or planting project. Its natural composition, ability to loosen heavy soils, prevent compaction, and promote root growth make it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to optimize their soil conditions and enhance plant vitality.
Let's say you have regular potting soil, but need cactus soil. You don't need to buy separate cactus soil because you can add some perlite to the mix in a 50/50 ratio, and it's now cactus soil. That's what improving heavy soils means, lightening and airing it up so water can flow through easily. The ratio of how you mix it depends on the needs of your plants. Do your research and give your plants the proper growing environment.
Perlite is a white, lightweight, and typically formed by the hydration of obsidian (Dragonglass. Game of Thrones reference). Be careful when digging it out of the bag as it can easily blow around and out of the bag. You also want to be careful in not breathing in any crushed dust particles.
This is a great product to improve existing potting soil you may have, or to create your own custom mix. Recommended.
